AGRISEC

AGRISEC (Critical Agrifood Cyber-Security and Resilience for IoT/AI-Driven Greenhouse Operations) provides a cyber-physical pilot integrating an end-user greenhouse operated using ODINS’ INGROVIA platform. It represents a critical agrifood infrastructure under NIS2, where both the physical IoT/Edge hardware and cloud-native digital services can be targeted, monitored, and protected. The pilot aligns with SYNAPSE’s objectives and offers an experimental environment in which SYNAPSE’s functions can be evaluated under operational conditions.

Current situation and general objective

The greenhouse operates as an automated agri-food facility. However, it lacks a unified cybersecurity monitoring and protection system capable of correlating anomalies across IoT devices, edge gateways, and cloud microservices. The INGROVIA platform manages sensor data, automation logic, and AI-powered optimization, but it doesn’t provide tools for detecting cyberattacks, orchestrating incident response, or analyzing cyber-physical risks. With SYNAPSE, the target scenario evolves into a cyber-resilient environment equipped with multi-layered anomaly detection, automated response execution, operator readiness training, and an integrated risk-benefit analysis that links cyber incidents to agronomic, operational, and economic impacts.

Specific project objectives

  • Objective 1 Risk Assessment: Expose SYNAPSE to high-frequency data streams on climate, substrate, fertigation, actuators, and microservices. This allows the platform to analyze the spread of cyber-physical risk and quantify technical and economic impacts, such as water misuse, energy deviations, or crop stress.
  • Obj2 AI-enhanced situational awareness: continuous monitoring of IoT devices, edge gateways, network flows, FIWARE entities, and AI outputs. This enables SYNAPSE to correlate multi-layered anomalies, reduce detection latency, and improve integrity violation detection.
  • Obj3 Response and Preparedness: Enable SYNAPSE to run coordinated mitigation playbooks on real Edge gateways that control irrigation, fertigation, heating, ventilation, and lighting actuators. This enables realistic preparedness and training scenarios for operators.
  • Obj4 Interoperable Information Exchange: Generate rich cybersecurity evidence (falsified telemetry, intrusion attempts, manipulated IoT flows, and microservice anomalies). This evidence can be sent to SYNAPSE’s CTI, alert, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Obj5 TRL7 Validation: The greenhouse functions as a complete TRL7 integration environment where SYNAPSE components are deployed, tested, and evaluated against complex, multi-vector cyber-physical attacks.
  • Objective 6 Impact and Sustainability: Measurable improvements in detection speed, integrity protection, actuator safety, and operational continuity demonstrate SYNAPSE’s value for critical agri-food infrastructure. This will support its long-term applicability and market adoption.

AGRISEC subproject is funded by the open call of SYNAPSE. SYNAPSE is a project co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Program (HORIZON-CL3-2022-CS-01) under Grant Agreement No. 101120853.
