We are taking a new step in our sustainability strategy! Thanks to the NEPHELE project, we are optimising electricity consumption by installing power meters in different circuits in our offices. This technology allows us to analyse consumption in real time, identify savings opportunities and ensure a more responsible use of energy, aligning us with our long-term sustainability goals.
What are power meters and how do they help us?
Power meters are devices that measure energy consumption in real time, recording key data such as:
-
Apparent energy: This is the total power that flows in the circuit, combining the active energy and the energy that is not converted into useful work (reactive). It is measured in kVAh.
-
Active energy: This is the energy actually consumed by devices to perform useful work (lighting, heating, moving motors, etc.). This is what companies bill and is measured in kWh.
-
Inductive Reactive Energy : This is the reactive energy generated by inductive loads, such as motors or transformers. It affects the efficiency of the electrical system, since it does not produce useful work and is measured in kvarLh (kilovolt-ampere reactive hours).
-
Capacitive Reactive Energy: Reactive energy generated by capacitive loads such as capacitors, long cables or capacitor banks. It is used to compensate for inductive reactive energy and improve the power factor. It is measured in kvarCh (kilovolt-ampere reactive hours).
In total, we have installed three three-phase and two single-phase meters in different areas of the company, including air conditioning, the CO2 recovery unit and general consumption.
Optimizing consumption for a sustainable future
Thanks to these measuring devices, we can have other smart devices (an IoT Connector, services developed for NEPHELE…) control the switching on and off of the equipment. Other benefits are:
- Identify the circuits and equipment with the highest consumption.
- Detects peak demand and reduces it during times of higher electricity costs.
- Avoid unnecessary consumption, such as leaving equipment on outside of working hours.
- Automate the use of IoT-enabled devices for efficient operation.
This initiative not only helps us reduce energy costs, but also reduces our carbon footprint and extends the life of our equipment, promoting a more sustainable and responsible operation.
