Murcia City Council is responsible for several million square meters of green space: more than 108,000 trees, 18,000 palm trees, 224,000 m² of vegetation and hedges, and 744,000 m² of grassland . Maintaining these areas in good condition is a complex and costly challenge.

Traditional irrigation based on manual programming and frequent operator movements entails high maintenance costs, as well as high water consumption and difficulty in detecting complex problems in a timely manner.

Added to this context is a global problem: climate change and water scarcity . Murcia, one of the most arid regions in Europe, could not afford to maintain an inefficient irrigation model.

The city needed to modernize and align itself with the Smart City concept, integrating technology that would allow for better resource management, reduce environmental impact, and ensure the sustainability of its green areas without compromising service quality.

Implemented Technology

To respond to this challenge, the Murcia City Council has opted for the implementation and incorporation of cutting-edge technologies, combining tools such as the MiMurcia platform, with sensors and customizable irrigation rules, and IRRIDEA systems, an innovative solution jointly developed by OdinS , a company specialized in IoT solutions with more than 10 years of experience, and Riversa , a company with almost 50 years of experience in the professional irrigation sector.

    More than 200 control devices and four weather stations have been installed, capable of monitoring more than 2,000 irrigation sectors and enabling the optimization and remote management of more than 20,000 sprinkler systems.
  • Data-driven automation
    The system adjusts watering times based on weather, soil moisture, and vegetation type . This ensures that each plant receives exactly the amount of water it needs—no more, no less.
  • Immediate alerts and open integration
    IRRIDEA sends real-time notifications of leaks or breakdowns , reducing response times. It also integrates seamlessly with Smart City platforms like MiMurcia , allowing technical teams to manage irrigation from their mobile phone or tablet.
