Buoys for water quality in Benidorm

Cities

Benidorm, one of the most touristic coastal cities in the Mediterranean, needed to improve real-time monitoring of its marine water quality to:

  • To complement and reinforce the measurements taken weekly during the summer and every two weeks the rest of the year by the Municipal Laboratory to check the state of the waters and detect any anomalies in the bathing areas of the beaches.
  • Comply with environmental standards to preserve the ecosystem.
  • Modernize municipal management by incorporating technological solutions within the project “Benidorm, a smart and sustainable tourist destination.”

Technology implemented

OdinS has deployed two smart oceanographic buoys in collaboration with Acuárea, an expert in maritime beaconing and underwater work.

The installed buoys incorporate:

  • Multiparameter sensors that measure: Water temperature; Salinity; Turbidity; Dissolved oxygen; Presence of hydrocarbons; Dissolved organic matter
  • Real-time data transmission to the municipal Tourism Intelligence platform, which will allow the various departments of the City Council to access dashboards to improve decision-making.
  • Ecological anchoring : anchors with concrete biotope dead ends and elastic moorings that respect the seabed, preventing damage to the posidonia meadows. The location is also agreed upon with the Instituto Ecológico Litoral.
  • Robust and safe design : 360 kg buoys with counterweight to maintain verticality and high-visibility materials.
  • Integration with Benidorm City Council’s Tourism Intelligence system, facilitating data mining and dashboard generation.

Benefits

The installation of these two smart buoys has allowed Benidorm to:

  • Obtain continuous, real-time data on the quality of your water.
  • Optimize environmental and tourism management decision-making by integrating data into the municipal platform.
  • Protect the marine ecosystem , anticipating potential risks such as spills or chemical imbalances.
  • Improving the visitor experience : Soon, citizens and tourists will be able to access this data through an app and a beach portal.
  • Strengthen its position as an innovative and sustainable tourist destination.
