Odin Solutions S.L. successfully completed its participation in IMAGINE-B5G Open Call 3, testing Virtual On-Board Units (vOBUs) that dynamically migrate across 5G edge computing domains during vehicle handovers at the Spanish facility in the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) over a 6-month period. The trials demonstrated seamless vOBU migration across Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) domains with zero downtime to external consumers, showcasing the potential of the effectiveness of MEC-assisted telemetry processing for connected vehicles.
IMAGINE-B5G is a Horizon Europe / SNS JU initiative that provides an advanced end-to-end 5G/B5G platform enabling large-scale trials and pilots across Europe. The project federates experimental facilities in Norway, Spain, Portugal, and France, offering SMEs, start-ups, academia, and industry access to test innovative vertical applications and platform extensions. SMATRA-5G was one of the 15 projects selected in Open Call 3.
The project aimed to address the challenge of ensuring seamless connectivity and reliable data access for connected and autonomous vehicles. Odin Solutions S.L. deployed vOBUs in the UPV facility to test dynamic deployment, automatic migration across MEC domains, and key performance indicators such as latency, reliability, and availability. The methodology included four comprehensive trials, with real vehicle and simulated movements, focused measurements of service continuity, latency, and reliability during handovers, and demonstrations of automated orchestration and edge resource management in realistic operational scenarios.
The project achieved the following results:
• Enabled seamless vOBU migration across 5G edge domains with zero service interruption.
• Demonstrated ultra-low latency of 9ms and 100% reliability in real-world trials.
• Validated new B5G platform capabilities for dynamic service orchestration.
• Advanced technology readiness from prototype (TRL 3) to real-world demonstration (TRL 5).
The project contributed to technological advancement in dynamic edge orchestration and enhanced reliability for connected vehicles in the transport sector, showcasing seamless service continuity and next-generation 5G functionalities. These results demonstrate the readiness of the vOBU solution for commercial deployment and industry adoption and strengthen Europe’s position in the B5G ecosystem.
Odin Solutions S.L. plans to scale up deployment of the vOBU solution, pursue commercialisation efforts with industry partners, and engage in further R&D and collaborations to extend capabilities and address broader mobility markets.
